I've been working on a few pieces recently. I usually work on one piece at a time, but I want to see if working on more than one piece allows me to see the work differently, or to transition from one to the next and not just focus on one piece from start to finish. Many of my artist friends, especially abstract artists, work on more than one painting at a time, so I want to see what, if any, effect it has on my work. I find it interesting switching from landscape to abstract, to wildlife... hopefully it will spark a new vision. I'll post some of the new work when it's been imaged. Take care! JH

A weekend of art and cooking

I had a nice weekend of painting and cooking. Yesterday evening I made beef bourguignon for the first time and was pleasantly surprised with the results. I then had a late night of painting on a desert landscape piece. It's a scene of New Mexico from the desert outside of Santa Fe. All-in-all it was a great, relaxing weekend. I hope you all had a splendid one as well!

I just finished painting this piece. I wanted to mix things up and paint another animal. I was always enamored with these guys out in nature. When I lived in Santa Fe, I'd fall asleep at night to the sounds of the coyotes out in the desert. Such a beautiful and alarming sound to hear a pack of these drifters shattering the silence of the night. Hope you enjoy. Cheers.

Winter's Dream

It's been awhile since my last post. I hope you all have had a wonderful fall/winter. Things were crazy around here for awhile, but they have settled down some now. Had a brother in hospital for several weeks, but thankfully he's out now and doing much better. Makes you realize what is truly important in life when you see someone you love go through so much and fight so hard. Truly puts perspective on things.

This is a painting I did for this year's Christmas Eve group show in Santa Fe, New Mexico: "If Past is Prologue." The show had a wonderful turnout and there were lots of people walking down Canyon Road enjoying the farilito walk. If you are ever in Santa Fe for Christmas, and I Highly recommend it, you HAVE to experience the farilito walk at least once. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

All paintings have been completed and shipped out to Sedona for next Friday's show. I am very excited to be back in Sedona among the red rocks. The drive up from Phoenix is one of my favorites as it's in the middle of prime Saguaro cactus country. Just a few more days. Hope to see you at the show!

It's a landscape in the New Mexico mountains during the autumn under full fall foliage. Aspen trees and whispering Aspen with distant mountains and evening sky. I just wrapped the final painting for the one-man show in Sedona for next month. This year's show consists of a mix of landscapes and wildlife paintings. I think the collection is cohesive and will hopefully look great hanging on the walls at Lanning Gallery. I'll attach an image of the most recent wildlife painting I finished; "The Watcher". They call it the Million Dollar Highway for a reason. The Aspen were near peak, and the drive from Durango to Ouray was electrifying. Absolutely beautiful.

San Juan Symphony - A Season of Appreciation

The San Juan Symphony Orchestra's performance of "A Season of Appreciation" was Amazing! The performance began with an inspired commissioned piece from San Cardon titled "Song of the Mountain Poets." Next came the Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 37 by Beethoven (with Norman Krieger performing on piano.) The concert was concluded with Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations (Variations on an Original Theme) Op. 36. The performances were flawless, inspiring and moving from beginning to end. I was honored to be a part of this years' "A Season of Appreciation." If you are ever in Durango, CO (and I highly suggest that you make plans to visit!) take the opportunity to experience the San Juan Symphony Orchestra. You will be moved and you will witness some magic on the mountains of southwest Colorado. -JH

Durango, Colorado weekend

I was fortunate enough to be asked to be the San Juan Symphony Orchestra's featured artist of 2011. I arrived in Durango yesterday and have had a marvelous time since my arrival. Yesterday I met with the director of the San Juan Symphony Orchestra, Kathy Myrick, and was given a tour of the arts center. Today I was part of the 'Diesel's and Easels' project. A Specialty Train For Artists, Art Lovers And History Buffs Collaborative Event Between The Durango Arts Center And The Durango And Silverton Narrow Gauge Train. The ride took us through some of the most beautiful scenery in southwest Colorado. I met some amazing artists, historians, fly fishing specialists and other wonderful people that made the day an amazing experience. The weather was perfect and the company was sublime. It could not have been better. Cheers!

Art Gallery sourcing in Chicago

I'm in Chicago checking out galleries and speaking with a few gallery owners about possible representation in the Windy City. This is my first time in the city and I am surprised at how inspired I am here. It's a very clean, safe-feeling city (in the downtown area where I'm staying, I've heard there are other spots in the city to avoid). The skyline at night with reflections in the Chicago river is drop dead gorgeous. Heading out to the galleries now and the Art Institute. Cheers!

I've been a bit lax lately with posting. Sorry about that! Busy busy, but starting to settle a bit. I just finished a new Aspen painting, 50" x 58", acrylic on canvas. I think it turned out well. It's a scene from a photo I took in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of New Mexico above Santa Fe during the autumn aspen color change. I hope you enjoy it! -JH

This is a new painting I just wrapped up titled "Infinite Tranquility II." It's an abstract piece, 36" x 48" on gallery wrapped canvas. Abstract work allows a lot of freedom and looseness that other subject matters do not. I enjoy working on abstracts in between landscapes and wildlife work as it challenges and inspires. Ghost Ranch Landscape

I just wrapped up this piece based on a landscape from Ghost Ranch, New Mexico in northern New Mexico. The mountain is the Pedernal Mountain which Georgia O'Keefe focused a lot of her art on. Her ashes are actually spread on top of the Pedernal. The desert is filled with sagebrush, cactus and rolling hills. This view is visible from the Ghost Ranch resort near Abiqui, New Mexico.
